If you’re lucky enough to be choosing tiles for a swimming pool, take a couple of minutes to look through this guide, as it could change your mind about everything.
Have you ever noticed how some swimming pools just seem so inviting, whereas others less so?
Without even knowing the temperature, some waters tend to look cold and uninviting, while others look positively balmy and welcoming as if they were teleported straight from the Bahamas even though it’s right in your backyard.
Well, it’s all to do with the way the light refracts and reflects as it hits, and gets absorbed by, the water.
Here’s why:
Absorption of Light
-
Water absorbs longer wavelengths of light (like red, orange, and yellow) more readily than shorter wavelengths.
-
Blue light, which has a shorter wavelength, is absorbed the least and scattered the most, so it remains visible even after other colors are absorbed.
Scattering
-
Like the sky, water also scatters light — especially shorter wavelengths (blue).
-
This scattering effect enhances the bluish appearance when you look through or across a large body of water.
It’s for these very reasons that the colour of the background you choose for your pool liner can have such a dramatic effect on the overall aesthetic of the water as well as the surrounding areas. The tiles you choose need to be considered for their effect on the water, as well as looking amazing in their own right!
